Regular city elections occur every two years. As defined, regular city elections would be those elections for which the mayor seat or council member seats are open. The city council may call a special election for reasons allowed by Iowa State Code. The next regularly held election will be in November 6, 2012 where three council seats are open for election.

The City Council consists of five “at-large” members who are nominated by eligible electors (a person 18 years of age or older and residing within Ankeny). Those interested to run for city council may pick up nomination papers from the City Clerk’s Office or the Polk County Election Office.

By Ankeny Municipal code, the City adheres to the primary election process, which means that if more than two candidates run for an open seat, a primary election is held four weeks before the regular city election.
