National track & field program has local event

ANKENY, Iowa (April 16, 2012) - The Ankeny Parks & Recreation Department, in cooperation with the Hershey's National Track & Field Games, will hold a local meet on Friday, May 4. This event is open to boys and girls ages nine to fourteen as of December 31, 2012. The annual local competition attracts over 200 area athletes who hope to later compete on a state and national level.
Athletes are divided into three age groups; 9-10, 11-12 and 13-14 with boys and girls competing separately. Running events include the 50, 100, 200, 400, 800 and 1600. Participants can choose between two field events, standing long jump and softball throw. Winners from the Ankeny meet have the opportunity to move on to the state meet in Marshalltown on June 16.
All competitions will be held at Prairie Ridge Middle School, located at 1010 NW Prairie Ridge Drive. Athletes should be on site by 5:30 p.m. for announcements and events will start at 5:45 p.m. This event is free and open to area youth from Ankeny and surrounding communities. The entry deadline is April 25. Registration is available online or in person at the Ankeny Parks & Recreation Office, 210 South Ankeny Blvd.
