Kids can prepare for 2012 Ankeny Youth Triathlon

TriathlonANKENY, Iowa (April 26, 2012) - With the popularity growing for triathlons, Ankeny Parks and Recreation is offering a program geared specifically for youth athletes who will be participating in the 2012 Ankeny Youth Triathlon on July 21 called Triathlon Prep. Participants can hone their swimming, biking and running skills during the seven-week prep program.

Triathlon Prep will be held on Saturdays from May 26 thru July 7 and will be led by Brandon Fredericksen, who has competed in over 50 national triathlons and instructed the program the past three years.

Participants must be able to swim 25 yards with no swim aids and be able to ride a bike without training wheels. Required gear includes: bicycle, bike helmet, swimsuit, swim goggles, towel and suitable running shoes. The program fee is $65 for residents and $78 for non-residents. Please note this fee does not include registration for the Youth Triathlon. The registration deadline is May 11.

About the 2012 Ankeny Youth Triathlon
The annual race on July 21 will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the Prairie Ridge Family Aquatic Center, 1220 NW Prairie Ridge Drive. Participants will be placed in divisions based on age. Boys and girls will compete separately in their respective age divisions.

Participants ages 7-10 will swim 100 yards, bike two miles and complete the event by running half a mile. Participants ages 11-14 will swim 200 yards, bike four miles and complete the event by running a full mile. Competitors will swim at the Prairie Ridge Aquatic Center, bike around the Prairie Ridge Sports Complex and run through the finish line at Prairie Ridge Middle School. Kids of all levels are encouraged to compete. All participants MUST wear a helmet during the cycling portion of the triathlon.

Pre-registration is required for this event. All participants must turn in their registration form and their $30 registration fee by 5 p.m. on Thursday, July 13. Late registration of $35 will be accepted after July 13 through July 19 at 5 p.m., but will not be accepted on race day.

Both the Triathlon Prep Program or the Ankeny Youth Triathlon have online registration or participants can go to the Parks & Recreation Office located at 210 S. Ankeny Blvd.
