Fire damages single family home in Ankeny

ANKENY, Iowa (Aug. 24 2012) - The City of Ankeny Fire Department was dispatched at 7:55 p.m., to a house fire located at 414 NW Westwood in Ankeny.
Fire crews were on scene within five minutes of being dispatched to find heavy smoke and fire at the rear of the structure. All occupants of the home were safely evacuated with no injuries. A family pet was recovered from an upstairs bedroom. Crews attacked the fire and had it under control within 45 minutes.
The home suffered significant damage to the exterior and heavy smoke damage to the content. The Red Cross was requested by the Fire Department for victim services.
The cause of the fire appears to be a charcoal grill left unattended on a deck. More information will be released as it becomes available.
The response to this incident included two engine companies, ladder company, RIT team, two ambulances, and assistance from Polk City, Altoona and Elkhart fire departments.
