The City of Ankeny launched its first-ever fire academy today with 23 new firefighter recruits. The 14-week academy is being held at the new Fire Station No. 4, which will be used for training ahead of its official opening in January 2026.
Recruits will complete hands-on instruction in fire suppression, rescue operations, department procedures and emergency medical services. Ankeny Fire Department personnel will lead the academy, providing recruits with practical, city-specific training. Training with Ankeny firefighters in the new facility and with the actual equipment they will use on duty will give recruits a valuable head start in preparing for service.
All 23 firefighters will join the Ankeny Fire Department upon successfully completing the program. Some will help staff Fire Station No. 4 when it opens in January, while others will be assigned to existing stations across the city.
