“Merle guided Ankeny through a period of remarkable growth and change,” said Mayor Bobbi Bentz. “He cared deeply about this community and the people who call it home. We are grateful for his years of service and extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.”

Mr. Johnson’s tenure marked the City’s first major period of expansion. According to the 2005 special census, Ankeny’s population grew to 36,161, up from 27,117 in 2000. The City’s boundaries also expanded to 26.45 square miles. His leadership helped the city navigate the opportunities and challenges that came with such rapid growth.

Among the major milestones during his time as mayor were the acquisition of 1,000 acres of former Iowa State University research land in 2003 and the selection of a master-planned community proposal for what became Prairie Trail in 2004. In 2005, the City sold the land to the developer, launching the 1,000-acre mixed-use neighborhood.

The City will recognize Mr. Johnson’s service during the next City Council meeting.
