Leash Law

New Leash Law (effective May 20, 2025)

Ankeny has a new leash rule to help keep people, pets and parks safe.

What Changed?

All pets (dogs/cats) in Ankeny must be on a leash no longer than 6 feet when they’re off their owner’s property.

This applies to:

  • Neighborhoods
  • Sidewalks
  • Parks
  • Trails
  • Other public or private places

Dogs are still allowed off-leash at the Ankeny Dog Park (with valid pass).

Why the Change?

The City updated the rule to:

  • Make public spaces safer and more enjoyable
  • Remove confusion from the old law

Before this change, animals could be off-leash if they were under voice control. That part of the law has been removed. The change to the ordinance underwent three public readings by the Ankeny City Council.

Help Keep Ankeny Safe

Please follow the new rule to avoid fines and help everyone feel comfortable in shared spaces.
