Update:

The Ankeny Police Department has identified the victim in a murder investigation that occurred at a residence in the 1000 block of NE Crestmoor Place.

The victim has been identified as Ankeny resident Sharon Jellue (30). 

As previously reported, officers responded to a welfare check at approximately 8:53 a.m. on Jan. 5, 2026, at 1010 NE Crestmoor Place, Unit 201. Upon entry, officers located Jellue deceased inside the locked apartment. The investigation determined she had sustained fatal injuries. 

Her long-time live-in partner, Johnson Chayee Browne, has been charged with Murder in the 1st Degree in connection with her death. Browne remains in custody at the Polk County Jail. This case remains an active investigation.

The Ankeny Police Department has charged Johnson Chayee Browne of Ankeny with Murder in the First Degree after responding to a welfare check at a residence in the 1000 block of NE Crestmoor Place.

Around 8:53 a.m. on Jan. 5, 2026, officers responded to a welfare check at 1010 NE Crestmoor Place, Unit 201. When officers arrived, they found a deceased adult female inside the residence with an apparent stab wound.

Through investigation, Ankeny Police Detectives identified Johnson Chayee Browne of Ankeny as the suspect, and he was charged with one count of Murder in the First Degree. Browne and the victim knew each other.

At the time Ankeny Police became aware of the deceased victim, Browne was already in custody in the Polk County Jail. This custody stemmed from an Ankeny Police arrest on Jan. 4 around 5:30 p.m. when officers were dispatched to a call of a suspicious male attempting to break into a vehicle. Officers arrived on scene, located Browne, who became combative and was subsequently arrested for Assault on a Police Officer and for Interference with Official Acts causing bodily injury. Browne was taken to Polk County Jail at that time on those charges.  

There is no threat to the public. This remains an active investigation. The identity of the victim will be released at a later time. Browne remains in custody at the Polk County Jail. No further information is available at this time.

The Ankeny Police Department is asking members of the public to contact police if they believe they may be a victim of a cryptocurrency investment scam connected to an individual recently investigated and arrested in Missouri.

The Ankeny Police Department was recently contacted by the Columbia Police Department in Missouri regarding a fraud investigation leading to the arrest of Charles Spencer Burri in their jurisdiction. According to Missouri authorities, Burri is the owner and operator of Burri Asset Management LLC and is accused of soliciting money from individuals for “cryptocurrency investments.” According to Columbia Police, after receiving money from the victims, Burri would stop responding to them resulting in significant financial loss.

Missouri investigators have informed Ankeny Police that during their investigation, they uncovered evidence that Burri possibly met with individuals in Ankeny and the Des Moines metro area during July 2025. Based on this information, Ankeny Police believe there may be additional victims in the local area who have not yet come forward.

Anyone who believes they may have been contacted by Burri or Burri Asset Management LLC, or who experienced financial loss through a similar fraudulent cryptocurrency investment scheme, is encouraged to contact the police non-emergency line (515-286-3333 ext. 5) and file a report.

Update: The investigation is nearing completion, and we are awaiting full autopsy results. Officers currently have no reason to believe there is any ongoing threat to the general public's safety. There is no further information being released at this time.

ANKENY, IOWA (September 16, 2025) – Earlier today around 12:57 p.m., officers from the Ankeny Police Department responded to a report of an unknown medical problem at 825 SE 3^rd St. When officers arrived, they discovered a deceased adult inside of the home. 

Ankeny Detectives are on scene investigating circumstances surrounding the death. The identity of the deceased is not being released at this time.

This remains an active investigation, and further information will be provided as it becomes available. Anyone with information related to this incident is urged to contact the Ankeny Police Department through the Polk County Sheriff’s Dispatch Center at (515) 286-3333, Extension #5.

On September 10, 2025 the Ankeny Police Department arrested Michael Scott Burrows (50) of Ankeny on three counts of lascivious acts with a child, a violation of Iowa Code Section 709.8(1)(c).

The arrest stems from an investigation launched after a report was received on August 8, 2025, alleging that Burrows inappropriately touched a child between August 25, 2021, and May 20, 2022. During that period, Burrows was employed as a band teacher at Ankeny Christian Academy, where the victim was a student.

Burrows turned himself into Ankeny Police detectives on Wednesday and was transported to the Polk County Jail.

No further details will be released at this time to protect the integrity of the court process and the privacy of the victim.

ANKENY, IOWA (August 4, 2025) – Ankeny police arrested Trenton L. Nelson on Monday for harassment in the first degree following an investigation into a report of inappropriate comments he made to juveniles at the Ankeny Skatepark.

On Sunday, Aug. 3, officers responded to a report of a suspicious person who had made lewd comments to juveniles at the skatepark the day prior. Multiple juveniles reported that a man, later identified as Nelson, made inappropriate advances toward them and attempted to persuade them to go to secluded areas with him.

Detectives took Nelson into custody without incident and located methamphetamine in his possession during the arrest. He was booked into the Polk County Jail. Nelson was also issued a trespass notice prohibiting him from returning to the skatepark and the Miracle League Park in Ankeny.

Ankeny police are continuing to investigate. Anyone with information about this incident or similar encounters of this nature with Nelson is encouraged to make a report to the Ankeny Police by calling the non-emergency line 515-286-3333 (ext.5).

ANKENY, IOWA (July 23, 2025) – Ankeny Police arrested Gemiere Cortez Goodwin and Merrelita Rae Kintz for multiple felony charges in connection with a violent home invasion that occurred earlier this month.

On July 1, officers responded to 2206 NW Ashland Parkway for a reported burglary which had just occurred. Upon arrival, officers located an elderly victim suffering from serious injuries consistent with being beaten and strangled. Several items were stolen from the home, including a firearm, personal documents, and cash. The victim was transported to a hospital, treated, and later released.

Through investigation, Ankeny Police Detectives identified Goodwin as a suspect. On July 3, Ankeny Detectives, with assistance from the Des Moines Police Department, located Goodwin at a smoke and vape store in Des Moines. During the arrest, Goodwin physically resisted while carrying the victim’s stolen firearm in his pants pocket, as well as stolen personal items with the victim’s name on them. An Ankeny Detective and a Des Moines Officer sustained minor injuries during the arrest.

A search warrant was executed at Goodwin’s residence, where investigators located additional evidence matching known items taken from the victim’s residence in addition to forensic evidence matching the crime scene. As the investigation progressed, detectives uncovered evidence that showed Goodwin’s mother, Merrelita Rae Kintz, conspired with him to commit the crime.

On July 22, the Ankeny Police Department located and arrested Kintz without incident. Kintz was booked into the Polk County Jail, where Goodwin also remains in custody.

The Ankeny Police Department takes burglary investigations very seriously, especially those involving violence, and remains committed to investigating these crimes to the fullest extent possible. 

Residents and the general public are encouraged to report any suspicious activity or criminal behavior immediately.

The Ankeny Police Department has received a $9,853 Community Betterment Grant the Polk County Board of Supervisors and Prairie Meadows to purchase new advanced radio earpieces for all current and future officers.

These earpieces feature cutting-edge micro speaker technology, allowing officers to hear radio transmissions clearly without blocking out surrounding sounds. This improves both situational awareness and safety during daily operations. The earpieces are also designed for comfort and long-term wear, helping reduce ear fatigue to the officer.

“One of the most critical tools an officer uses while serving the public is their radio,” said Ankeny Police Chief Darius Potts. “This grant helps ensure our officers can communicate clearly and safely, which directly impacts the level of service we provide to the community.”

The Ankeny Police Department is grateful for the partnership with Prairie Meadows and the Polk County Board of Supervisors for advancing our commitment to providing officers with the latest and best tools to improve communication, enhance safety, and better serve the public.

The Ankeny Police Department is excited to introduce the newest member of its dedicated team, K9 Charlie. Charlie is a 2 ½ years old Belgian Malinois, who brings a wealth of skills to the force.

Assigned to Officer Colton Campbell, a four-year veteran of the Ankeny Police Department, K9 Charlie joined the department in June of this year. Since then, he has undergone rigorous training in narcotics detection, tracking, and apprehension. Officer Campbell and K9 Charlie have completed several training programs, demonstrating their commitment to maintaining the highest standards in law enforcement.

The addition of K9 Charlie to the Ankeny Police Department was made possible through the generous support of an anonymous donor. Their commitment to public safety and the well-being of the community has directly contributed to enhancing the capabilities of our police force.

The City of Ankeny is pleased to partner with the Polk County Health Department (PCHD) on their "Talk it Up, Lock it Up" gun safety campaign.

“We talk about car seat safety and the importance of wearing bicycle helmets, yet we haven’t talked about gun safety. Gun injuries are now a leading cause of death for children and young adults in Polk County. It is more important than ever, that we come together to improve the safety, health, and wellbeing of our children", said Helen Eddy, Director of PCHD.

PCHD’s prevention approach includes normalizing conversations about gun safety and safe storage among family and friends. It is important to talk about gun safety in relation to places where a child or young adult may spend time. This approach also includes conversations about safe firearm storage during physician visits, and increasing access to safe storage devices, such as trigger locks. Free trigger locks are available for pick up at PCHD and law enforcement agencies. Update - Aug. 29, 2023: Early this morning Breanna Colleen Peters (25) turned herself in at the Polk County Jail in regard to the death of her infant son in March of 2022.  Breanna is charged with Child Endangerment Causing Death. She is currently incarcerated at the Polk County Jail.

This morning Ankeny Police Detectives arrested Charles Henry Peters (28) at his home in Cedar Rapids in regard to the death of his infant son in March of 2022 in Ankeny. Peters is charged with Child Endangerment Causing Death. Peters is currently incarcerated at the Polk County Jail. This is an ongoing investigation and no further details will be released at this time.

The Ankeny Police Traffic Unit would like to remind drivers that roads can only be safe for everyone if we are all following the traffic signals. Depending on the speed limit of the roadway, the yellow light only lasts for a second or two.  A “steady circular yellow” or “steady yellow arrow” light means vehicular traffic is warned that the related green movement is being terminated and vehicular traffic shall no longer proceed into the intersection and shall stop. A violation of a yellow light (321.257(b) is punishable by a citation fine of $210.25. View the Iowa law.

From Memorial Day through Labor Day marks what AAA calls the “100 Deadliest Days” for teen drivers. Nationwide, more than 30 percent of deaths involving teen drivers occur during this 100-day period. An average of 2,108 teens are involved in deadly crashes, every year. 660 (31%) of those occur during the 100 Deadliest Days.

We are asking drivers to please use care and caution while traveling through these neighborhoods. All residential neighborhoods streets are 25 mph zones unless otherwise posted. With the weather getting warmer there are more kids outside playing, people walking their dogs and other pedestrian traffic. There is also an increase in bicycle and motorcycle traffic on the roads. Please slow down and drive with caution.

Today at approximately 4:25 PM, the Ankeny Fire Department was dispatched to 9855 NE Frisk Drive after receiving a call indicating that a vehicle had started on fire in the driveway of the residence and the fire was quickly spreading to the house because of the wind.  The Ankeny Fire Department responded immediately and arrived on scene within four minutes.  The incident was quickly upgraded to a second alarm, which dispatched additional resources from the following fire departments:  Elkhart, Polk City, Saylor Township, Urbandale, and West Des Moines.  Additional agencies that also helped included Mid-American Energy, Polk County Emergency Management, and the Ankeny Police Department.   

When the Ankeny Fire Department arrived on scene, crews found fire coming from the vehicle in the driveway and a large amount of smoke and fire coming from the attic of the residence.  Crews immediately began to extinguish the fire, but had to evacuate due to heavy fire conditions throughout the residence and a partial roof collapse.  Crews were able to contain the fire in just over an hour, but will remain on scene for additional time to extinguish hidden fires.  The homeowners, who were home at the time of the fire, were able to safely evacuate.  There were no injuries to the homeowners, nor responders.  The cause of the fire is under investigation. 

Early this morning at approximately 1:40 AM, the Ankeny Police and Fire departments were dispatched to 803 NW 32nd St. after receiving a call reporting a car had crashed into this home. Ankeny Police and Fire departments immediately responded to the scene.Upon arriving at the scene, emergency responders found a car in the basement of the house, which was fully engulfed in flames. The residents of the house were able to safely evacuate, but it is currently unknown if there was more than one person in the car. 

The driver of the car was unable to exit the vehicle and passed away as a result of the fire. Personnel on scene are currently working to extract the vehicle from the home, but the structure is unstable.The incident is currently under investigation by the Ankeny Police Department, who are working in conjunction with the Ankeny Fire Department to determine the cause of the crash and the subsequent fire. The identity of the driver will not be released until their next of kin have been notified.The Ankeny Fire Department was assisted by the Polk City and Altoona Fire Departments to extinguish the fire.  MidAmerican Energy also assisted at this scene.

The Ankeny Police Department will have extra officers on patrol on Friday, March 17, ready to stop and arrest drivers suspected of driving under the influence. Officers will be working the metro streets on St. Patrick’s Day as part of Central Iowa Traffic Safety Task Force (CITSTF) project in conjunction with the Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau’s (GTSB) sTEP enforcement week.

Today multiple citizens have contacted the Ankeny Police Department to report they had received a phone call from Lieutenant Brian Huggins of the Ankeny Police Department who told them they had warrants out for their arrest for failure to appear and contempt of court.  The person they spoke with was not Lieutenant Huggins, but someone impersonating him.  This imposter then told these people he will transfer them to his Captain for more details.  They are then transferred to another person who claims to be Captain Greg Throckmorton, but this person is also an imposter (It should be noted Captain Throckmorton retired from the Ankeny Police Department 11 years ago).  The citizens are then told they need to go to Wal-Mart where they will be sent a code so they could pay a for their fines without going to jail.  At this time the Ankeny Police Department is unaware of anyone who has sustained a monetary loss. 

Additionally, caller ID will show the calls are coming from the “Ankeny PD” and a fake voice mail account has been set up so when citizens call these numbers back it sounds like you are calling the Ankeny Police Department, but the Ankeny Police Department would like to assure the public this is a fake voice mail account.  Two of the phone numbers associated with these calls have been identified as (515) 420-5075 & (515) 428-7995, but these scam calls could be coming from a several different phone numbers. 

The Ankeny Police Department and the City of Ankeny would like to publicly state neither the Police or Fire Departments will ever call and ask for money over the phone.

If anyone ever calls claiming to be from any law enforcement agency (local, county, state or federal) or the IRS and asks for money, social security numbers, credit card information and/or gift cards, hang up call the local authorities and report the call.  No law enforcement agency will ever ask you for money or to purchase gift cards for them over the phone. 

UPDATE: Dec. 27, 2022 - John Janssen has been located safely and reunited with his family.  The Ankeny PD would like to thank the public for their help with this matter. 

Dec. 26, 2022 - The Ankeny Police Department is seeking assistance in locating a missing elderly male.  John Janssen (75) was reported missing on Dec. 22 and was last heard from on Dec. 10.  Janssen is a white male, 5’ 7”, with a thin build, a long gray hair and beard (Janssen’s hair and beard were significantly longer than what is pictured the last time he was seen).

Ankeny Police case - #22-006340

On Monday, Nov. 28, 2022, at roughly 1:30 a.m. the Ankeny Police Department responded to the Yankee Clipper, 312 SW Maple Street, on a report of a person shooting a gun in the parking lot.  As officers arrived, the subject attempted to leave and a traffic stop was conducted.  The subject was detained and brought to the Ankeny Police Department where he was questioned by detectives. 

It was determined the suspect had been in an altercation with anther patron of the bar which led to a shot being fired.  After speaking with the victim, witnesses and the suspect, Robert “Bobby” Barker (53) was charged with Attempted Murder and taken to the Polk Co. Jail.

The Ankeny Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) want to help make homes safe by destroying all expired or unused prescription drugs and over-the-counter medications during National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. Ankeny police officers will be at the Ankeny Police Department, 411 SW Ordnance Rd., Saturday, Oct. 29, 2022 from 10 a.m.- 2 p.m. to take possession of any expired or unused prescription drugs and over-the-counter medications.

Last spring, Americans turned in nearly 360 Tons of prescription drugs at nearly 5,144 sites operated by the DEA and 4,427 of its state and local law enforcement partners. DEA, along with its law enforcement partners, has now collected 7,995 Tons of expired, unused, and unwanted prescription medications since the inception of the National Prescription Drug Take Back Initiative in 2010.

The Ankeny Police Department will collect tablets, capsules, patches, and other solid forms of prescription drugs. Liquids (including intravenous solutions), syringes and other sharps, and illegal drugs will not be accepted. The DEA will continue to accept vaping devices and cartridges at its drop off locations provided lithium batteries are removed.

Helping people dispose of potentially harmful prescription drugs is just one way the DEA and Ankeny Police Department are working together to reduce addiction and stem overdose deaths.

The Ankeny Police Department was recently provided a tip by the Internet Crimes Against Children taskforce (ICAC) in regard to child exploitation/pornography.  After a collaborative investigation between the Ankeny PD and ICAC, Matthew J. Marcalus (54) was arrested on Oct. 6 in Ankeny on multiple charges and taken to the Polk County Jail.

Marcalus had been in contact with a victim and was expecting to meet this person when he arrived at an Ankeny business, but was immediately placed under arrest by detectives from the Ankeny PD.  Marcalus was in possession of images of child pornography and sexually explicit messages he had received via social media from a victim at the time of his arrest.  Investigations of this type are complex and can take a long time to complete. The Ankeny Police Department would like to remind the community the internet, for all of its benefits, also gives criminals and predators an easy way to reach young people. The FBI most often sees crimes against children begin when an adult creates a relationship with a young victim online and then later arranges to meet and abuse the child. They are also known to coerce a child into producing sexually explicit images or videos through manipulation, gifts, or threats—a crime called sextortion.

The most important advice for parents/guardians is to have open and ongoing conversations about safe and appropriate online behavior. Other advice to consider:

• Educate yourself about the websites, software, games, and apps that your children use.
• Check their social media and gaming profiles and posts. Have conversations about what is appropriate to say or share.
• Explain to your kids that once images or comments are posted online they can be shared with anyone and never truly disappear.
• Make sure your kids use privacy settings to restrict access to their online profiles.
• Tell your children to be extremely cautious when communicating with anyone online who they do not know in real life.
• Encourage kids to choose appropriate screen names and to create strong passwords.
• Make it a rule with your kids that they can't arrange to meet up with someone they met online without your knowledge and supervision.
• Stress to your children that making any kind of threat online —even if they think it's a joke—is a crime.
• Report any inappropriate contact between an adult and your child to law enforcement immediately. Make note of the app or website they were using.

Ankeny case # - 22-004846

On Friday Sept. 16, 2022 the Ankeny Police Department, Iowa State Patrol and Iowa Department of Transportation in conjunction with the Central Iowa Traffic Safety Task Force and the Governor's Traffic Safety Bureau completed a traffic safety awareness project on Interstate 35.During the project, 131 vehicles were contacted. 88 citations and 104 warnings were issued. There were 11 DOT inspections conducted and three motorists needed assistance on the roadway. Two arrests were made, one traffic offense and one narcotic offense.  19 officers from the above-mentioned law enforcement agencies participated.The Ankeny Police Department would like to remind all drivers to buckle up, drive sober, and to drive safely.

As of Sept. 13, 2022, 231 people have lost their lives on Iowa roadways as a result of vehicle crashes.  42 percent of those who died were not wearing a seatbelt.

Unbelted drivers and passengers, excessive speed, impaired driving and distracted driving continue to be the leading contributing factors in fatality crashes.

The Ankeny Police Department, in conjunction with the Central Iowa Traffic Safety Task Force and the Governor's Traffic Safety Bureau, will conduct a traffic safety awareness project in the City of Ankeny on Friday, June 24, 2022.  Officers from multiple metro law enforcement agencies will be participating.

The project's main goals are to enforce distracted driving laws and move over violations, although all traffic infractions will be enforced.

The Ankeny Police Department would like to remind all drivers to buckle up, drive sober and drive safely.

On Saturday, Feb. 26 at roughly 10:54 p.m., Ankeny Police officers were dispatched to 1343 SW Prairie Trail Pkwy (Prairie Point Apts.) in reference to a large fight.  Seconds later, dispatch advised they were getting reports of multiple shots fired at this location.  Another caller reported a white vehicle leaving the area following the gun shots.  

Ankeny officers located a white car with no lights on leaving the area as they responded.  Officers initiated a traffic stop with this vehicle at SW Oralabor Rd. & NW 26^th St. (County designation).  As this vehicle came to a stop, two subjects exited the vehicle and began shooting at officers as they ran from the vehicle to the southwest.  Officers returned fire, but both subjects were able to run into a wooded area.  A perimeter was set up and officers are continuing to search for these subjects.  Two people who remained in the vehicle were detained and are being questioned by Ankeny detectives.  

The officers and passengers of the suspect vehicle were not harmed.  It is unknown if the suspects were injured in this exchange.  Both subjects remain at large at this time.  This is an ongoing investigation, please avoid the area.

On March 1, after an extensive investigation, the Ankeny Police Department charged five juveniles with multiple crimes in regard to the incident  involving shots fired at Ankeny officers on Feb. 27. Investigators filed two counts of attempted murder against Marbati Y. Gabrab (17) for his actions at both the Prairie Point Apartments and traffic stop by Ankeny Officers.  The investigation into this matter is ongoing, with more arrests anticipated. The individuals listed and pictured below have been charged as adults.

**UPDATE** Kyler Vander Ploeg was located safe in Ankeny this afternoon. The Ankeny Police Department would like to thank the public for their help in this matter.   

The Ankeny Police Department is seeking the public’s assistance with locating Kyler Vander Ploeg (15).  Vander Ploeg was reported missing on March 8 and has not  been seen by family members since March 4, however, he has been seen in the Ankeny area as recently as March 9.  No one has been able to make contact Vander Ploeg at the time of this release.  Vander Ploeg is 5’10”, 165 lbs. with black hair and was last seen wearing a gray hoodie.

Ankeny Police Case - #22-001166

 On Tuesday, March 29, 2022 at roughly 12:20 a.m., officers were dispatched to 713 SW 28^th St. on the report of gunshots in area.  Officers did not find any victims or suspects when they arrived in the area, but did find multiple shell casings. 

A short time later a male walked into a local hospital with a gunshot wound.  This subject was treated and released.  He was interviewed by officers about the incident and this case remains under investigation.

In honor of National Police Week, the Ankeny Police Department invites the public to attend the 2022 Ankeny Police Week Community Picnic on Thursday, May 12, 4 – 7 p.m., at the Ankeny Police Headquarters, 411 SW Ordnance Road in Ankeny.

Residents are invited to meet Ankeny police officers and detectives, see Ankeny’s classic 1964 police car, CSI van and other equipment used by officers, take a tour of Ankeny Police Headquarters and witness the landing of the LifeFlight helicopter at 6 p.m. Ankeny officers will also offer free child safety seat inspections. Chick Fil-A will serve the first 1,000 attendees a free meal and Kona Ice will give away free snow cones while supplies last. All activities are free and open to the public.

This event is designed to provide a community service while fostering ongoing communications and relationships between the local Police Department and Ankeny residents.

National Police Week takes place May 11 - 17. This week serves as a designated time to celebrate police officers and the important work they do in our nation’s communities. President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation in 1962 designating National Peace Officers Memorial Day as May 15, and the week in which that date falls as National Police Week.

On Monday, May 16, 2022, at approximately 11:26 a.m. Ankeny Police went to 910 NE 5th St. in reference to a four-year-old female with a gunshot wound.

Ankeny police officers and Ankeny Fire Department personnel went to the residence and began to treat the child’s injuries. Ankeny Fire Department Medics transported the girl to a local hospital, where she died due to her injuries.

The Ankeny Police Department is investigating the incident. Detectives are talking with family members, neighbors, and witnesses.

Ankeny Police case - #22-002323

On Monday, May 16, 2022, at approximately 11:26 a.m. Ankeny Police went to 910 NE 5th St. for a four-year-old female with a gunshot wound. She was transported to a local hospital, where she died of her injuries.

The victim is identified as Savannah Holmes (age 4). 

No more information will be released until Ankeny Detectives have finished the investigation. This is an isolated incident; there is no danger to the public.

Early this morning, Akeem Holmes turned himself in without incident for his involvement with a shooting that occurred on May 16. He was arrested and is currently in the Polk Co. Jail with the following charges: neglect of a dependent person, involuntary manslaughter, and unlawful access of a firearm to a minor.

On Monday, May 16, 2022, Ankeny Police responded to a call for a four-year-old female with a gunshot wound. The victim, Savannah Holmes, was transported to a local hospital, where she died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Thanksgiving is the leading day of the year for home fires involving cooking equipment. The Ankeny Fire Department would like to offer some safety tips to help keep you safe in the kitchen this holiday season. 

Safety tips to prevent kitchen fires and burns:

• Have a “kid-free zone” of at least 3 feet around the stove and areas where hot food or drink is prepared or carried.
• Be on alert! Don’t use the stove or stovetop if you are sleepy or tired.
• Attend to your cooking. Stay in the kitchen while you are frying, broiling, or boiling food. If you leave the kitchen for even a short period of time, turn off the stove.
• If you are baking, simmering, or roasting food, check it regularly and remain in the home while food is cooking.
• Use a timer to remind you that food is cooking.
• Keep anything that can catch fire – oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging, towels or curtains – away from your stovetop.
• Make sure your home has working smoke detectors.

If you do have a small kitchen fire, and decide to fight the fire, do the following:

• On the stovetop, fight a small grease fire by sliding a lid or cookie sheet over the pan and turning off the burner. Leave the pan covered until it is completely cooled.
• For an oven fire, turn off the heat and keep the door closed.
• For a microwave fire, keep the door closed, turn the microwave off, and unplug if able to.
• Make sure you have a working fire extinguisher in your house for small fires. Always be 6-8 feet away from the fire, and have your back to an exit. To use a fire extinguisher, remember PASS:
  • Pull the pin to activate the handle lever
  • Aim the nozzle at the base of the fire
  • Squeeze the handle
  • Sweep back and forth from side to side.

If you have any doubt about fighting a fire:

• Get your family out of the house. Close doors behind you as you leave to contain the fire.
• Call 911 from outside the home. In a multi-family residence, close the door behind you and activate the fire alarm system on your way out.
